The field of polymer science started when the first natural polymer cellulose was discovered in the 1830s. Over the next two centuries, the field has emerged into its own distinguished discipline within the materials science subfield. Polymer science has three major components: polymer chemistry, physics, and characterization. Together with the emerging field of sustainable polymers, the polymer science discipline now caters to both synthetic and renewable polymers and their derived properties.
Since the industrial revolution in the early nineteenth century, there has been significant technological advancement in the application of polymers. This has resulted in the advent of a subset of polymer science i.e. plastics engineering; a field that is dedicated to developing engineered materials from polymers and other substances with the aid of unique plastics processing equipment.
The Polymer Science and Plastics Engineering series combines the two interdisciplinary fields of polymer science and the plastics engineering to bring state of art advances in science and engineering of polymers and plastics. The book series publishes both short and standard length monographs, textbooks, edited volumes, handbooks, practical guides, and reference works related to all aspects of polymer science and plastics engineering including, but not limited to, renewable and synthetic polymer chemistry and physics, compositions (e.g. blends, composites, additives), processing, characterization, testing, design (materials and equipment), and applications. The books will serve a variety of industries such as automotive, food packaging, medical, and plastics as well as academia.
About the Series Editor:
Srikanth Pilla is an Assistant Scientist in the Bionates theme at the Wisconsin Institute for Discovery, University of Wisconsin-Madison, USA. Prior to this, he was a Materials & Process Design Scientist at SuGanit Biorenewables LLC, Toledo, OH. Dr. Pilla received post-doctoral training from Stanford University and his PhD from University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. He has authored more than 50 scientific publications including peer-reviewed journal papers, conference proceedings, book chapters, technical articles in international trade magazines, etc. In addition, he authored a text book on modeling of nanocomposites as well as Handbook of Bioplastics and Biocomposites Engineering Applications (2011 Wiley-Scrivener). He is a reviewer for more than 17 international journals and currently serves on several SAE international technical committees. He has organized and chaired several conference sessions including SAE World Congress. Dr. Pilla is an Associate Editor for SAE International Journal of Materials and Manufacturing and also serves on the editorial board of Journal of Renewable Materials, published by Scrivener Publishing, LLC and on the board of Injection Molding Division of the Society of Plastics Engineers.
