Permission Letter Sample

The policy of Scrivener Publishing is that we require all material submitted for publication to be supplied with permission from copyright holders where appropriate. It is the duty of authors/editors/contributors to acquire the appropriate permission before the manuscript is sent to the publisher.

The general rule is that reproducing under 400 words in one extract or 800 words in multiple extracts is permissible without seeking permission from the copyright holder. However, acknowledging or referencing the source is required. Authors should be mindful that some estates of well-known authors have stricter interpretations so please check with Scrivener Publishing if in doubt. Illustrations, tables, poems, and music always require permission.

Please use this generic letter if helpful. You may cut and paste the text below or Download this letter in an MS Word Doc.

Address this letter to the copyright permissions officer of the registered copyright holder as well as to the author of the text or illustration. The letter assumes the sender is an author, so please amend if you are an editor or contributor.
