Series: Astrobiology Perspectives on Life in the Universe

Series Editor: Richard Gordon and Joseph Seckbach

Scope: In his 1687 book Principia Isaac Newton showed how a body launched atop a tall mountain parallel to the ground would circle the Earth. We are both old enough to have witnessed the realization of this dream in the launch of Sputnik in 1957. Since then our ability to enter, view and understand the Universe has increased dramatically. A great race is on to discover real extraterrestrial life, and to understand our origins, whether on Earth or elsewhere. We take part of the title for this new series of books from the pioneering thoughts of Svante Arrhenius, who reviewed this quest in his 1909 book The Life of the Universe as Conceived by Man from the Earliest Ages to the Present Time.

Astrobiology Perspectives on Life of the Universe volumes will each delve into an aspect of this adventure, with chapters by those who are involved in it, and careful observers and assessors of our progress. Guest editors will be invited from time to time, and all chapters will be peer reviewed.

About the Series Editor:
Richard Gordon, PhD, dickgordoncan@xplornet.ca
Theoretical biologist with B.Sc. in Mathematics from the University of Chicago and PhD in Chemical Physics from the University of Oregon, retired from Department of Radiology, University of Manitoba in 2011. Presently at Gulf Specimen Marine Lab & Aquarium, Panacea, Florida and Adjunct Professor, C.S. Mott Center for Human Growth & Development, Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology, Wayne State University, Detroit Michigan. Interest in exobiology (now astrobiology) dates from 1960s undergraduate work on organic matter in the Orgueil meteorite with Edward Anders. Has published critical reviews of panspermia and the history of discoveries of life in meteorites.

Joseph Seckbach, PhD, Joseph.seckbach@mail.huji.ac.il
Received his MSc. & Ph.D. from the University of Chicago and did a post doctorate in Caltech, Pasadena, California. He led a group researching exobiology (extra-terrestrial life) at UCLA and spent postdoctoral period at UCLA, Tubingen, Munich and Harvard University. He served at Louisiana State University (LSU), Baton Rouge, LA, USA, as the first selected Chair for the Louisiana Sea Grant and Technology transfer. Professor Joseph Seckbach has edited over 35 books for various publishers. Beyond editing academic volumes, he has published more than 140 scientific articles on plant ferritin–phytoferritin, cellular evolution, acidothermophilic algae, life in extreme environments and on astrobiology. He also edited and translated several popular books. Dr. Seckbach is the co-author of the Hebrew-language Chemistry Lexicon (two editions by Deveer Publisher, Tel-Aviv).
