Charles A. Bishop
Often new technologies, processes or materials suddenly appear that attract some publicity. It is not always easy to find reviews of these advances that allow the reader to compare and contrast the different technologies. This series of books aims at providing a source of information that will enable the reader to obtain an overview of groups of recent advances in technologies, processes or materials.
About the Series Editor:
Charles left school at 16 to start an engineering apprenticeship completing it as a Toolmaker. Opting to return to education he took a degree in Materials Technology. Here the seeds of vacuum processing were sown in the form of a final year project working on bone implants. Moving to the Physics Department at Loughborough University, he went on to complete Masters and Doctorate degrees on different aspects of roll to roll vacuum deposition onto flexible substrates. He worked in the research team that won the B.P. Energy Conservation Awards, the National Prize in April 1982 & the International Prize in July 1982. After a brief time as a post-doctoral researcher he moved into industry for the next 15 years before setting up his own consultancy business in 1998.
He is the author of the books ‘Vacuum deposition onto webs, films and foils’ and ‘Roll to Roll Vacuum Deposition of Barrier Coatings’ and chapter 5.7.2 ‘Transparent Conducting Coatings on Polymer Substrates for Touchscreens and Displays’ in the book ‘Handbook of Visual Display Technology’ and co-author of chapter 14 ‘Vacuum metallizing for flexible packaging’ in the book ‘Multilayer flexible packaging’.
He is the author or co-author of more than 75 papers and 5 patents. He edits the Blog ‘vacuum web coating’ on behalf of AIMCAL and is on their panel of ‘Experts’ to answer problems members send in. He is also a regular contributor to the AIMCAL magazine Converting Quarterly as well as a Lecturer in the AIMCAL educational programme ‘Converting School’ and occasional webinar presenter. Charles was presented with a SVC Mentor Award 2008.
